92-year-old female World War II pilot flies fighter jet for first time in 70 years
The years flew off a 92-year-old female World War II pilot as she soared through the skies again in a Spitfire.
“It’s very hard to describe the feeling,” Joy Lofthouse told BBC News from the cockpit of the familiar fighter jet. “It almost makes one feel young again.”
The trailblazing former Air Transport Auxiliary member said she was “aware of her age” and less confident than she was during her last flight 70 years ago.
Joy Lofthouse, a 92-year-old World War II veteran and former Spitfire pilot, was able to fly the iconic plane again.
But she prepped for departure anyway because manning the “iconic” aircraft was “the nearest thing to having wings of your own and flying,” the Gloucestershire, England woman said.
Joy Lofthouse, of England, is pictured here in 1945.
It's incredible to be in a Spitfire again after so long,” Lofthouse said. “I’m so lucky to be able to fly it again.”
Lofthouse shuttled war planes back and forth from the front lanes to factories as a service pilot in the all-female division, according to the Mirror.
“We had no radio, and once you took off, it was complete silence,” she recalled. “That was the big difference today: There was someone talking all the time.”
Lofthouse was given wings again Friday to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe.
