NGE Admitted To Have Collected N50m From Jonathan

The Nigerian Guild of Editor (NGE) has on Wednesday, January 6, confirmed to have received N50 million from former president Goodluck Jonathan.

The knowledge of this was first revealed in a statement by editor-in-chief of Thisday, Nduka obiagbena, in a letter he wrote to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in December.

The NGE in statement made available to reporter explained that the guild actually received N50 million from Jonathan’s tenure.

It claimed that the money was donated to the NGE at a fundraising dinner in April 2014.

The NGE noted that a dinner was hosted with the intention to raise money for the construction of a secretariat for the organization.

The guild further disclosed that the fund was presented by the former minister of information and national orientation, Labaran Maku and was deposited to  its Zenith Bank account.

Sahara Reporters reported that the NGE lambasted President Muhammadu Buhari, insinuating that the attempt to drag the organization into the $2.1 arms scandal may likely be motivated by Buhari’s desire for alleged revenge for earlier statements made by the NGE regarding the current war on corruption.

The guild’s statement read in part: “It is regrettable that an earlier statement by the Guild on the anti-corruption war of the government of President Muhammadu Buhari may not be unconnected with recent attempts to drag the Guild into a matter in which it has no case whatsoever.”

Meanwhile, Femi Adesina, the special adviser to the president on media and publicity had earlier reacted to allegations that he collected N50 million from the Office of the National Security Adviser.

Adesina said the NGE will respond to allegations made by Nduka Obaigbena.
